Cheryl Cole was thrown into the media spotlight in 2008 when her cheating husband, Ashley, got caught out. Rather than wither and lose it, she saved her marriage, became an X Factor favourite judge, decided to go solo AND won the hearts of every man and woman in the UK. That's a strong, sexy go-getter of a girl. But before all that, here's what ONLYDNA had to say on the matter just after she was betrayed:
It’s been a bad few years for ONLYDNA when it comes to the ladies. Time after time, it seemed like anyone we held a torch for couldn’t leap into the arms of some unsuitable no-mark fast enough. First, we had to look on as Kylie latched onto Gallic philanderer Olivier Martinez. We felt a small pang when money-conscious melon-farmer Jordan swanned off into the sunset with Peter Andre’s filthy Antipodean hands mauling her paps. We wept bitter tears when Christina Aguilera – a woman we thought would never get bored of slutty behaviour – cheerfully became a housewife for a tubby mole. And we drowned our sorrows at the bar when our favourite ‘guilty pleasure’, Amy Winehouse, wobbled off down the aisle with a below-par Pete Doherty impersonator.
But none of this hurt us as much as when Cheryl Tweedy – the brightest star in the girl group firmament – threw her lot in with Ashley Cole. She agreed to marry the sly footballer a mere eight months after meeting on the dancefloor at London’s Funky Buddha. And in a £100,000 wedding dress, too – building blocks for a doomed marriage if ever there were.
Thankfully, the nuptials seem to be rapidly unravelling – largely because Cole has similar views regarding loyalty to his wife as he does loyalty to clubs. In late January he prompted the biggest transfer speculation of the winter window – when The Sun revealed that he’d cheated on his wife with pinch-faced London hairdresser Aimee Walton. Not only that, he’d thrown up on himself in the process and then offered to pay for a termination. He’d also spoken like a true 14-year-old regarding condoms: “I don’t do that shit.” Horrified at the thought of his potentially clap-ridden infidelity, Cheryl has been pictured ‘heartbroken’ on the front of the tabloids; or at least wearing comfy clothes and a bit less make-up.
The rest of Girls Aloud are reported to have ‘rallied around’ Cheryl. We like to imagine that her band members have responded to form; Sarah Harding turning up with a bottle of cheap vodka. Nicola Roberts giving her a phone number of some relatives in Liverpool who can ‘have him done over for a ton’. Nadine and Kimberley standing around, looking a little unsure of what their purpose is.
We’re throwing our weight squarely behind Cheryl (as, we suspect, will most of the British public). Since Girls Aloud started in 2002, her rise through the ranks of British celebrity has been unstoppable. With more than four million records sold in the UK alone, the band have unrivalled critical and commercial adulation and an uncanny knack for turning out irresistible Blitkrieg pop music.
In an era when celebs seem to descend into a tear-streaked meltdown under the slightest pressure, they seem refreshingly well-adjusted. Tweedy can attribute this to a lifetime spent in the public eye; as a child she cut a swathe through Newcastle’s kiddy modelling circuit, being voted Boots ‘Bonniest Baby’, the Evening Chronicle’s ‘Little Miss’ and later on, ‘Most Attractive Girl At The Metro Centre’. Which, we can all agree, is some accolade. And now? One small benefit to the recent tabloid hoopla: votes for Cheryl in FHM’s 100 Sexiest competition have been cascading in.
FHM would also like to take this opportunity to offer a collective apology for the stupidity of famous men. Whether it’s Hugh Grant ignoring Liz Hurley and tapping off with a tubby streetwalker, or Jude Law knocking off the nanny instead of Sienna Miller, these idiots just don’t know when they’re on to a good thing. While Cole’s history of tapping up other clubs, writing self-pitying autobiographies and posing in a fruity white suit for the National Lottery suggest a man not exactly in touch with common sense, his latest antics are on a different level.
Relationship expert Tracey Cox claims he’s done it because: “In the celebrity world, Cheryl has a higher profile than him. That’s not going to make him feel like the big man – and by having an affair where he’s the only famous person it’s as if he’s stamping his authority.” Truly pathetic. And not the kind of behaviour you’d find from us. So here’s hoping our favourite pop star isn’t wasted on a goon like Cole.
